Welcome to sudcamp – a technology hub. Today we will be discussing on different types of ports available like VGA, DVI, HDMI individually, their comparison (VGA Vs DVI Vs HDMI) and their conversion (VGA to RCA, DVI to VGA, HDMI to DVI) from one to another. In this modern era of digital technology’ our electronics gadgets (LCD TV, HD/FULL HD monitors and high ends mobile phones) are equipped with most advanced ports and their supporting cables. In order to have clear understanding of these gadgets, it is mandatory to learn and understand these digital terminology.
What is a VGA port?
VGA (Video Graphics Array) is the most common and versatile analog connector used to interconnect digital electronics. This usually supports low resolution video display. VGA ports are most commonly used in connecting a lcd/led monitor with a computer (CPU). And also used in connecting plasma, lcd and led TV’s with computer and other digital electronics.
In our modern digital life these VGA ports will be replaced by DVI and HDMI ports, still VGA ports are mostly used. As these ports are not able to support high resolution, so when a full HD monitor is connected with a computer, there may occur small noise in the video display. Thus for a HD and Full HD display DVI and HDMI are always recommended as they offer high quality video display without any distortion and noise. A VGA ports always come in blue color.
VGA cables are used to connect one VGA port to another. Usually a monitors or a LCD/LED TV is connected to computer by using this VGA cables. This VGA cable is cheap as compared to DVI and HDMI cables, this is the reason most electronics supplier provide this cable along with the product.
What is a DVI port?
DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is a less common video display interface. It is used for connecting a Digital display like full HD monitor and high end LCD/LED TV. This port is usually white in color. When compared to VGA port VGA offers a better video display without any noise and distortion. Thus DVI is a digital ports which transfers a digital video signal from computer to the monitor.
These DVI ports supports high video resolution of full HD order (1920x1080p) or any other higher resolution. It is difficult to transfer much data and fps(frame per second) via VGA ports, so these DVI ports were invented to overcome this difficulty.
DVI cables are used to connect a DVI port to another DVI port. Thus a HD/Full HD monitor or LCD/LED TV can be connected to a digital device via this DVI cables. This cable usually cost little much than a VGA cable cable, also this cable doesn’t comes along with products and you must have to buy it from electronics store.
What is HDMI port?
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact and combined audio/video interface used for carrying a uncompressed audio/video signal from one HDMI compatible digital device to another compatible digital device. HDMI ports are used mainly when we want to connect our LCD/LED TV with our laptop or mobile phone. As our mobile phone or laptop may not support high resolution video display, thus we can connect to LED/LCD TV to enjoy the full HD display. This HDMI ports are also used in digital camera’s and SLR camera , so that we can view high resolution display on TV, as these camera’s have small screen and will not support higher resolution.
Thus a HDMI port is a digital video and audio interface used for connecting a low resolution device with a higher resolution device usually a LCD/LED TV. HDMI offers Dolby digital 5.1 audio sound.
Normally HDMI ports comes in 3 sizes, namely
1- Standard HDMI port (for TV and computers)
2- Mini HDMI port (for laptop and digital camera)
3- Micro HDMI port (for mobile phones and ipods)
HDMI cables are used to connect two HDMI ports or any two devices supporting HDMI compatibility.
VGA Vs DVI Vs HDMI-
A VGA port is a video display interface which connects a analog device like (monitor) with a digital device like computer. VGA carries analog signal and it only carries video signal. Usually most popular in world. VGA port produces some noise on high resolution devices. [only video, signals are analog in nature]
A DVI port is a video interface which connects connects a analog device like (monitor) with a digital device like computer. DVI carries digital signal it only carries video signal. This is less popular as compared to VGA. DVI offer best quality video quality on high resolution devices. [only video, signals are digital in nature]
A HDMI port is audio and video (both together) interface which connects a one HDMI compatible digital device to another compatible HDMI digital device, usually a mobile phone or a laptop to a LCD/LED TV. This is also a popular as compared to DVI but less popular than VGA. HDMI offer best quality video along with audio for high end LCD/LED TV’s. [only video, signals are analog in nature]
VGA to RCA converter/connector-
This connector is used for connecting a device like LCD/LED monitor with a CD/DVD player. This is a old method of connecting devices, rarely used now a days.
DVI to VGA converter/connector-
Normally if our laptop/computer does not have any VGA output, off course it has DVI and HDMI output ports and we want to connect with a monitor which has only VGA ports, then this DVI to VGA connector comes to picture. Normally this rarely happens.
HDMI to DVI converter/connector-
This connector is used when we have to connect our mobile phone or iPod to our TV or monitors screen. HDMI to DVI converter/connector transfers only video signal, it doesn’t support audio signal.
