By the end of this tutorial you will be able to move your wordpress (blog or website) to a new hosting server, here from Godaddy server to Hostgator hosting server. Although migrating wordpress from one server to another is a little bit tough job as it also includes database migration. Normally files can be transferred very easily by just downloading from one hosting server and uploading to another hosting server in a specific root directory. Apart from file transfer we also have to move our database by exporting from previous servers database and importing in a new server database. Finally the most important step is changing the name servers of the domain. Here we have to put name server of new hosting server(Hostgator in our case).
Although the whole process is complex, so i am dividing the whole process in steps. Here i am assuming that we are migrating from Godaddy server to Hostgator server, things will remain same in case you have any other server. For any help you can comment below.
Step 1- Migrating your files from previous server to new server.
here one can use FTP clients like Filezilla or default web based Godaddy FTP file manager, both will work with equal ease. However Filezilla can be more convenient for you, as we have to pick and drop there. Now here i am assuming here that you know how to add a domain in Hostgator using (Addon domains) application. After adding your domain you will be getting a specified root directory/folder. Now upload your files downloaded from Godaddy to this folder in Hostgator.
Step 2- Exporting the previous database from Godaddy.
Login to your godaddy control panel and click on MYSQL icon, in order to proceed.
Here you have a list of database’s hosted on your server, now select the database you want to export. Then click on manage via phpMyAdmin.
You will be redirected to a new window, now login by entering database username and password associated with it.
Now select the database on left hand side.
Now click on export button, as shown by arrow below.
Make sure all the option are selected, which are highlighted below. Save the .sql file on your hard drive.
Step 3- Creating a new database in Hostgator.
Login to your Hostgator control panel, go to database section and click on shown icon below.
Here we are creating a new database.
Here you can either create a new user to associate with the newly created database or you can also associated the previously created user.
Step 4- Importing the previous database to new Hostgator database.
In order to import already downloaded database, select the phpMyAdmin icon as shown below.
Now select the database newly created to which we want to import.
Now click on import button in order to proceed for importing process.
Now located the .sql file already downloaded from godaddy and submit go. Also make sure that all the option are marked tick correctly as shown below.
note :- your database may look empty. here i have taken database with tables already.
Congratulation you are done with the importing process.
Note - Sometimes there occur a error #1044 – Access denied for user ‘username1′@’localhost’ to database ‘user2_wrdp9′
solution - just replace the previous database user name (godaddy) in downloaded .sql file with the new database username created with Hostgator database.
Step 5- Editing the configure.php file
Step 6- Changing the name server-
In order to change the name server, login to godaddy domain control. Here you can have a look to the original name server, which has to be replaced by Hostgator name servers.
Enter your Hostgator name server names as shown below.
Now wait for about 10 minutes, let the new name server to update worldwide ISP providers. One can check that whether his new name server is updated or not by visiting www.who.is
All is over, enjoy
